Pride of Filipinos - the Heritage City of Vigan

Its been months since I posted a blog. Dr. RM would not be happy about this. My excuse would be that lack of time and well inspiration that stimulate my brain to produce an article. But hey, now I am posting again.

For the past 5 months, a lot of issues have been introduced. The war between Hezbollah and Israel, the oil spill, the never ending quest to impeach GMA, the world cup, etc. Actually the topic that I would like to talk about right now is none of the abovementioned. For a change I will be talking about the Solidarity Day Celebration of the
Heritage City of Vigan.

Every September 8, the City of Vigan is celebrating together with the other World Heritage Cities in the World the Solidarity Day. FYI this day is the day the people of Vigan renew our pledge to continue protecting the rich heritage of our city.

Several activities were launched to celebrate this occasion. A parade bagged as the "Repazzo de Vigan" was held wherein barangay officials from the 39 barangays, students and nongovenment organizations depict the kind of life of the BigueƱos (term for the people of Vigan) during the pre-war, war and post war periods. This is not just an ordinary "foot parade". The participants are acting while walking that is, like a musical only in the streets. Thanked God the rain did not pour yet during the parade. After, it rained.

Another acitivity is the "Visita Museo" for the elementary students. The purpose of which is to instill in the young minds the importance of protecting Vigan with the ultimate goal of loving Vigan and being proud of it.The rationale of it is that how can you protect something that you don't love, so here in Vigan we are trying to educate the young about their beloved town so that in the future they will have the sense of pride that would lead them to continue protecting and preserving the Heritage City of Vigan.

These are noble activities which aims at injecting a sense of pride to the people of Vigan. However, in my personal point of view, many Biguenos do not have yet the sense of pride. There are still those who are not aware of the importance of Vigan in the world and don't have the passion and love to Vigan.

Hopefully, the solidarity day which is held every year would eventually, through the years instill real PRIDE to being a Bigueno. It takes a lot of political will and participation from different sectors to truly realized this goal but I know we can achieved this. Because being proud of our cultural heritage gives us identity not only as Bigueno but also as Filipinos!

The Art of Debate

Im presently listening to the debates of the Vigan City Council regarding the proposed ordinance regulating beerhouses, videoke bars within the city. Well, the deliberation for this proposed measure have been for months now. I supposed the members of the Council have not yet expressed what they really want. Actually they have been in the period of amendments for how many sessions. They ended the period of debate but, it seems to me they are still in the period of debate, because they are still arguing. People really has the hard time making theirmind. Every session, they have something new to say. well if that will be the case, theres a possibility that the original proposal will be totally changed into a new one.

Hmmm, I heard a great statement from one of the City Councilors, "to have a more Liberal Rules". Gong! Reminded me of my workshop at FNF. I just wished I talked more during that seminar.

Going back, the continuous and seemed infinite debates of the Council on the proposed ordinance, come to think about it is just the way of expressing what they have in mind, to improve the proposed measure. its not surprising because they are legislators. They have always something new to say. They are just being Liberal right, expressing their ideas. But I am not saying that they can debate forever. There's always a bottomline of course and I hope that is soon.

I know that listening to debates and arguments might be boring to someone, actually in reality its boring to most people. I admit, I am too is quite bored. Not until I have discovered the beauty of it, what can I say, for almost 3 years now I have been a witness to different types of arguments and debates. Name it, arguments that are really significant and catchy up to to arguments that are totally out of order. Its exhausting really to hear debates. You'll have a cognitive overload- a feeling that your brain cells cant take anymore additional information. Info toxification kumbaga.

But, during these debates, whether these are sensible or senseless, that a certain measure is being crafted to perfection. It is in this process that loopholes and the weakness of a proposed measure are being identified. Aside from this, it is also where proposals are being presented to address the weaknesses and fill up the loopholes.

Lets face it, debate or argument is something that we can't avoid. Its not only in the plenary that there are debates or arguments. In our daily life, we always argue on something. In every decision we make, we argue and debate.

Then I can say, DEBATES are not BORING after all.

Game na Game Na!

After absenting from work for a day because of fever and colds plus dry cough, Im back to work. Got a lot things to do. Got to Submit articles and pictures for the Manila Times-Barangay News-Vigan Edition, a lot of reading and researching regarding proposed legislative measures, plus reviewing for my stat exam on saturday. Sounds like Ill be having an exciting weekend huh.

But yesterday, I had the chance to just lie down and relax while watchin' tv. Well not quite, because I had to finish the article for the barangay news so that I could send it today., I hope. But hey, I got the day off.
What's the latest buzz on tv? Well nothing new, the same old never ending korea novelas, game shows, talk shows, reality shows, movie marathon in HBO. cinemax, star movies, wow wow channels and of course the pinoy tagalog movies channel. With these line up. I end up watching the famous game show, Game na Game na! I found it interesting because the contestants were badings. But hey not ordinary badings, because they are really gorgeous! Even prettier than the host, Krissie.
Their looks were deceiving. For a first timer who would see them would be fooled that they are really a woman. Well aside from the fact that they had undergone a series of surgeries just to have a woman's body, I guess, they are really a woman because their heart beats like a woman, and that is what makes a person a woman.
I wonder, why do man who was born to be a man, wants to be a woman. Why didn't they developed as a woman while still in the womb of their mother? Is it in the genes? Is it hereditary? Or its just their destiny to be one?
In my own point of view, I think they are destined to become a woman. It is where their heart is. It is where contentment and happiness lie. And the existence of gays proves that a woman is as powerful as a man, as influential as a man.
Later I thought, was the episode a part of the celebration of the Womens Month? Hmmm, what do you think?

Let's Podcast Amici!

My stomach is full after having a very, very satisfying italian lunch, courtesy of amici de don bosco. I'm still in the process of digesting what I ate and still deciphering what we had discuss this morning. Podcasting is much complicated than blogging. I was confused with its technicalities, the terms and the process of producing a podcasts. Thanks to the food, my brain started to digest and absorb the concepts discussed.

Come the production of our podcast. I belong to the talk show group. I immediately volunteered to do the intro part because I'm not really a speaker. Fortunately I got the part. After discussing the flow of our discussion on how to promote liberalism, we had the chance to be recording stars and it was really fun. Although I must admit I mumbled some of the words and the tone of my voice was, I must say, monotonous. Please bear with me because its really my first time! I still had to do some practicing, practice makes perfect. Well, I guess I had to do it myself now.

After requesting for extra minutes, and extra minutes to edit our podcasts, we presented them and come the critiques on what we have done. And RM expressed the strenghts and weaknesses of every group, but in the end, he congratulated us for a job well done. Thanks Dr. Meinardus!

The two days workshop was really an enriching experience for me. As 2 days ago, I have no idea on what blogging and podcasting are. Now, I know how tom create a blog and well even though with its technicalities, I, with the help of Mr. Racoma and my gang on Liberal Gong (teresa, ray, councilor Peter and Chris), produce a podcast.

Looking forward to introducing these high tech communication tools in my hometown Vigan..Kudos to Friedrich Naumann Foundation for this wonderful workshop!

A Day of Blogging

At 7:00 Am I left my best friend's house in Baclaran to attend the workshop on blogging and podcasting sponsored by FNF. As I was in the MRT and while riding ib the jeepney, I was already thinking on what to expect, who are the participants and what activities are we going to do. About 8:30 am, I finally arrived at the office of FNF, which seems to me is not an office but a residential house.

Minute by minute my fellow participants started to arrive. Then the workshop finally started with Dr. Meinardus welcoming us and gave a backgrund and objectives of the workshop. And well, with an instant acitivity, with the question why blog? The early discussions enligtened me regarding blogging. The next activities, with Manolo discussing on the essentials of blogging, the actual process on creating a blog, I slowly had in a sense, well should I say had already an overview on blogging.

After a day with blogging, well I consider myself as a blogger.Hmmm, sounds really cool, although for me the term blogger seems to sound a negative connotation (like smuggler or robber), but, definitely not.

I'm impressed with the presentations and lectures done by expert bloggers, Manolo Quezon who right now I consider as the King of Blogs. With their expertise, I was able to learn technical terms that I never heard before, regarding blogging, pointers on how to create a blog,a real blog, not like my friendster blog i which I believe is not a blog anyway.

This day is enriching for me. Im looking forward in learning what's in with us tomorrow.
